At Nautilus Pet Rehabilitation, we incorporate underwater treadmill (UWTM) to provide the ability to offer exercises that are functional without being painful. UWTM adds the benefits of weight bearing while giving the ability to alter the water depth and tread speed in a buoyant environment. Aside from the obvious goals of strength, speed, and endurance, UWTM also aids in correcting coordination, balance, and postural awareness. Common conditions in which it is utilized includes ruptured cruciate ligaments, patellar luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, intervertebral disk disease, weight loss and athletic conditioning. UWTM can basically be utilized for any orthopedic and neurologic condition, but the timing in which to incorporate this modality is crucial for optimal recovery and outcome. Therefore, consultation with a rehabilitation specialist should be pursued as soon as possible to determine the best plan for your pet.
